Qualifying the water front area had as strategic goal to link the city to the river without the city to loose its port activity, which is a powering factor of the economic activity in the Lisbon region. The Port of Lisbon Authority (Administração do Porto de Lisboa, APL, SA) was deeply interested in a wide plan to modernise its infrastructures, and a whole set of actions in the different fronts have been carried out. The result is the definition of uses – port and leisure areas. The development of such action over an area of some 234 ha has been articulated with the city minding the natural assets protection, as the existing ecosystem of the largest estuary in Europe.
LOCATION AND ACTIVITIES

The Port of Lisbon is located at latitude 38° 42’ North and longitude 09° 06’ West, and occupies a large part of the Tagus estuary. The high tide has the maximum value of 4,4 m. The main access channel to the port has depths of 14.5 m referred to chart datum.

Excellent port of natural deep water, the Port of Lisbon has a long water front of some 43 km interfacing with 11 municipal districts, and occupying a wide multifunctional area where cargo handling, cruises, recreational boating and other leisure activities. Yet the Port is not a whole of docks, cranes, quays, warehouses and containers; it is also an ensemble of social and recreational, tourism and cultural areas where multiple activities and interests converge.
